THE LONG DANCE HOME
2025
approx 3.5 feet X 14 inches X 14 inches
The Long Dance Home was included in the solo exhibition, An unhusked grain of rice fills the whole house at Galerie B-312, curated by Kara Skylling. This work is made from a 3-D scan of low-relief wall decorations taken from my grandparents’ house in Batan, Aklan, Philippines. Likely bought from a souvenir shop in Baguio City, the figures originally depicted a traditional folk dance called, Tinikling. From the 3-D scan, duplicates were made using the CNC machine, carved from salvaged wood scraps. These duplicate forms were then cut and assembled in a circular formation, decontextualising the dancers from dancing over bamboo sticks to an endless procession. The wood was ebonized using steel wool and white vinegar. The dancers are set atop a wooden base crusted with used ground coffee and salt crystals.
This work was made possible with the help of Tyler Jordan, Jonathan Onyschuk, Tom Simpkins and Kara Skylling.
